The Renovator's catalog has
been accepting advertising since 1979. Originally, vendors contacted the
company and wanted us to carry their line in our catalog. We were growing at
such a rapid rate that there was not enough room in the warehouse to take on
additional product lines. The vendors were dismayed and asked if there was
anything we could do to help them out. Often, their product was so large, bulky
and heavy such as cast iron stoves and large ceiling fans that we knew that no
matter what our warehousing situation was we could probably never accommodate
their wishes.

As the years progressed, the
advertising fluctuated in size between 4 pages and 14 pages per catalog. The
number of catalogs and frequency of catalog editions also fluctuated over the
years. In some years, the advertising program made a little money and in
other years it lost a little. Since advertising was not our primary
business, it was neglected from time to time and we even tried to discontinue
the program twice. Every time we tried to discontinue the program, several
advertisers complained and argued that we were either their primary, or one of
their primary sources of revenue. We have felt an obligation to stick by
our advertisers, many of whom have been in virtually every edition for over 20
years. The department was expanded and the program made far more
professional effective October 1999. The company is now actively seeking
new advertisers rather than just relying on the same advertisers that have been
with us for the last few decades.
